We started Tropical Wholefoods in Uganda in the early 1990s. "We" being me, Kate Sebag and my partner Adam Brett.
We were both working in Uganda at the time. We wanted to help Ugandan farmers sell their fruits at good prices in European Markets.
Solar fruit drying seemed the answer. Its an affordable technology, uses only renewable energy (the sun), adds value, extends shelf life, and makes fruits more transportable, retaining waste at the point where it is grown.
Fruits are sun dried when fresh and fully ripe so capturing flavour - and with our solar drying systems, no preservatives or sugars are added.
We set up a network of farmer suppliers with Fruits of the Nile and soon we were importing our first sun dried bananas and pineapples from farmers.
Our second supplier partner was Gebana Afrique in Burkina Faso who supplies us with dried mangoes and cashews. Apricots, almonds and walnuts were to come next from Mountain Fruits in Pakistan.
For Tropical Wholefoods, Fairtrade means more than just buying fruits at Fairtrade prices. We also give technical advice to all our suppliers.
This can be us helping with factory management and design, advising on organic and Fairtrade certification, or on best agricultural practice.
Staff from Africa or Asia can benefit from coming to our factory in Sunderland for in-house training. We also help our partners get development funding to grow and improve their businesses.
At our Fullwell Mill factory, we don't just buy and sell Fairtrade products, we actually make them too!
In our 15,000 square feet of space in Southwick Industrial Estate, Sunderland, we run a busy dry packing line where we put all our sun dried fruits and nuts into Tropical Wholefoods bags.
We also run a snack bar bakery unit. Here we make all the Tropical Wholefoods bars., and also devise and make snack bars for lots of other customers too.
Some are for sports nutrition, some are more for health and diet. They all taste great of course and our delicious Fairtrade fruits and nuts that we import help to achieve this quality.
Our factory has been certified for many years to British Retail Consortium (BRC) Global Standard at Grade A. We are also Soil Association approved for Organic manufacture and packing as well as being registered Fairtrade licensees.
Running our factory to these high standards means we really know how to do food manufacturing properly.
We think that part of our Fairtrade mission is to share this knowledge with all our trading partners overseas, and as widely as possible.
In recent years, we have helped design bespoke food factories for Fruits of the Nile in Uganda and for Mountain Fruits in Pakistan.
We have also worked on computer systems development at the cocoa co-operative Kuapa Kokoo in Ghana, and in Uganda, the coffee co-operative Gumatindu and the vanilla estate Ndali.
We are currently working with Serendipalm, an Organic and Fair Trade Palm Oil processing plant in Ghana.
